Gathering Garlic

My dear Elodie, Your father says we are nearly out of garlic again, so I will write down the places where it may be gathered, should you pass that way. The first patch lies just south of where the Little Road of the Fields meets Red Hill Road, nearly halfway along the rise between the Veine River and the Vairon Quarry. The ground there is loose and the bulbs grow close together beneath the soil. There is more garlic a little west of that place, in a small clearing south of the Vairon Quarry, where the forest opens and the sunlight reaches the earth. You will also find many such patches in the forest across the river from the Forlorn Hope, scattered beneath the trees. There are enough there that one could gather a basket without walking far. Beyond this, the woods east and southeast of the Smith of the Underbridge are said to hold garlic in great number. The bulbs grow widely through that part of the forest, too many places to properly mark. Timothy also claims there is yet another patch no more than a hundred paces west of the Smith of the Underbridge, upon the higher escarpment. Take care when digging them up and brush the soil away gently so the bulbs keep whole. -Mother
