A final letter from Etienne to Reynauld, written in the Pit as the Hunger closed in.
Full text
Captain Reynauld,
Ambrose is finished. Our father’s knife served its purpose - cut clean, as it ever did in steadier days. Justice is done, as near as such things come in this world.
I found Ferrus - or the creature that bears his name. May God have mercy on what remains of him. I dared not loose him, not for the sake of any soul yet drawing breath.
I am hemmed in now, deep within the Pit. I hear them moving. You know I’d never turn my hand against myself; what follows is only to deny the world another Hunger.
Be proud of me, as I have ever been proud of you.
I hope I see you in time, but not too soon.
Your brother,
Etienne
Captain, 1st Voltigeur Company
