Flax Along the Rivers

Supplementary Report - Flax Observations along the Marette and Vain Rivers Captain, In the course of these recent surveys I have, by necessity, become something of a student of the local flora, and I believe it worth reporting the presence of flax in several locations throughout the district. The growth appears healthy in each place and may prove of use if gathered. The first instance was observed along the Marette River, on the bank opposite the Sleeping Eye Mill. A second cluster lies at a place the men have taken to calling East Islet, a small rise of ground in the middle of the Veine River, east of the mill. We have also found flax growing in a natural hollow opposite a woodsman’s hut, the same hut recently put to the torch by brigands. This location lies west of Jacques Bridge, again along the Veine River. The fourth and most considerable growth lies in a place known among the men as the Mass Grave. This is a collection of low, hollowed islands where the ground has receded and where, during the unfortunate clearing of Bellefontaine, many bodies were cast. The site lies nearly midway between the Smith of the Underbridge and the Forlorn Hope. Flax grows there in great quantity across the swampy ground. The place is unpleasant to approach, owing to the stench of the dead and the frequent presence of the Hunger, but the yield may justify the risk for those prepared to gather it.
